Distinctive bold black-and-white wing patches characterize this bird in flight. Nonbreeding individuals display an overall white underside with hints of warm brown and orange on the head and back. During breeding, they turn white with black or gray back plumage. Found breeding on tundra in northern latitudes, these birds form winter flocks that migrate south, sometimes mingling with other field bird species. Recognize them by their unique tittering rattle and "tew" calls during flight. Their foraging groups emit harsh buzzy calls as well.
