This Atlantic seabird is a large species with a distinctive long, pointed bill, wings, and tail. Adults exhibit a striking appearance with bright white feathers, a cream-colored head, and black wingtips. It takes several years for them to attain their adult plumage; juveniles initially display a sooty-brown hue and gradually develop more white feathers as they mature. These birds nest in vast colonies on cliffs along the North Atlantic coast. Predominantly living at sea, they stay relatively close to land, making them easily visible from shore or whale watching boats. Known for their torpedolike diving to catch fish, they often form sizable feeding groups, although they may also be seen alone.
