The bird is a black-and-white seabird with a stout bill, nesting in groups on rocky islands and migrating to the sea in winter. It has black upperparts, white underparts, and a fine white line near its eye. During winter, its white throat extends behind the eye but with a less defined pattern compared to the Common Murre. Although resembling other murres, it can be distinguished by its unique bill shape and longer tail which is occasionally raised. These birds are spotted alone or in gatherings, often observed from the shore in significant quantities after winter storms. They frequently plunge underwater to hunt for fish.
