Typically inconspicuous on the ground, larks are best identified by their melodic airborne songs. Their warbling tunes are often heard high above, the birds themselves mere specks in the sky. On land, look for their streaked brown feathers, bushy crest, and pale eyering. Unlike pipits, they have a more robust build and lack the characteristic tail-bobbing behavior. In flight, their white tail sides and wing edges stand out. Larks thrive in open terrains like grasslands, heaths, farmlands, and even airports.
