Kestrel

Falco tinnunculus

2 Photos

This petite falcon showcases unique male plumage: a gray head, rusty back, and a gray tail with a wide black tip. The female exhibits a brownish hue above, adorned with barring on the back, wings, and tail. Noteworthy are its sharply pointed wingtips (differing from the rounded wings of Accipiter hawks) and distinctive dark spotting on the breast. Thriving in open landscapes, farmlands, grasslands, and heathlands, this bird often frequents grassy expanses near roads and airports. It commonly perches on wires and posts, employing a hunting technique that involves hovering, sometimes at considerable heights. This species bears a striking resemblance to the Lesser Kestrel.
