Little Egret
Egretta garzetta
4 Photos
This petite heron, adorned in snow-white plumage, flaunts a slender dark bill, blackish legs, and yellowish feet known as "golden slippers." During breeding season, the adult boasts two long wispy head plumes and a cascade of white plumes ("aigrettes") on the lower back. Thriving across diverse wetlands like lakes, rivers, and estuaries, it frequents locales abundant in small fish. Often spotted solo or in small relaxed clusters, this species congregates for nesting and roosting activities. While distinctive within its habitat, distinguishing features can be drawn when comparing it to larger Great and Intermediate Egrets, the stockier Cattle Egret, and the white morph reef herons.
