Bittern

Botaurus stellaris

1 Photos

The stout, brown Bittern inhabits vast reedbeds, displaying remarkable secrecy. Typically observed individually in flight, particularly during dawn and dusk, it moves stealthily and can be easily missed due to its cryptic plumage that merges seamlessly with the reeds. Look for its tawny-brown facial region and neck, along with a blackish cap and streaked upperparts. An unusual "booming" call frequently gives away its presence. Distinguish from young Black-crowned Night-Herons by noting their pale-spotted upperparts and preference for tree perches (bitterns typically stay on or close to the ground).
