Great Spotted Woodpecker

This woodpecker, found across Eurasia, features distinctive black-and-white plumage with large white shoulder patches, red markings on the vent, and a black crown. Males sport a red nape patch, while juveniles of both sexes have a red cap. Its size and bold coloring make it stand out in its habitat. This species thrives in various forest types, parklands, gardens, and farmlands with hedges and scattered trees. It primarily forages on tree trunks and branches, occasionally visiting feeders. Identified by its sharp “kik!” call, it drums frequently, producing rapid sequences that fade swiftly.
