Tawny Owl

Strix aluco

1 Photos

A medium-sized owl with dark, profound eyes, this species is strictly nocturnal and rarely observed. Sporting a brown to gray plumage, it features a large, rounded head. Preferring woodland, forests, parklands, urban regions, and churchyards with ample trees, it typically roosts concealed amidst foliage during daylight hours and can be located through the agitated calls of small birds mobbing it. Active at night foraging in clearings and open spaces, it is commonly identified by its trembling hoots and piercing "kee-wik!" cries emitted during the nighttime.
