3 Photos

This striking, sizable raptor possesses a long, forked, rusty-orange tail and displays effortless flight marked by languid wingbeats and graceful glides as it circles above fields and roadsides. Similar to the Black Kite, it can be distinguished by its overall reddish hue, lighter facial features, increased white markings on the underwings, and a more pronounced fork in its tail. Found in diverse semiopen environments ranging from woodlands to farmlands and moorlands with hedgerows and wooded areas, it also frequents urban locales. Known to scavenge alongside crows, this bird showcases a unique and elegant presence in the skies.
