Sparrowhawk

Accipiter nisus

2 Photos

This hawk is relatively compact with a lengthy tail and wide, rounded wings unlike kestrels. It can glide at times but is typically observed swiftly hunting small birds mid-flight or perched calmly in shadows. Recognizable features include golden-yellow eyes and barred underparts—grayish on females and rusty on males. Juveniles appear brownish above for their first year. Significantly smaller and less robust than the Northern Goshawk, it displays horizontal barring on its underparts instead of vertical stripes. These hawks inhabit woodlands, forests, farmlands, and urban regions with hedgerows and wooded patches, occasionally venturing into gardens for hunting.
