Small lively bird found in open terrain like heathland, gorse, moorland, weedy meadows, marsh edges, and grassy areas with low bushes. Often seen perched on bushes or fences, dropping to the ground to feed before returning to a perch. Males have a blackish head, large white neck patches, and an orangey breast. Females are brownish with a paler eyebrow, dull orangey breast, and a flight display revealing a lighter rump against a dark tail. Their warbled song is brief and buzzy, accompanied by dry "tchak" and rising "weet" calls.
