White-tailed Eagle

Haliaeetus albicilla

2 Photos

This large raptor features a substantial size, long heavy bill, wide plank-like wings, and a short, graduated tail. Resembling a flying barn door, it glides with its wings held relatively level unlike the Golden Eagle''s slightly raised wings. The plumage is predominantly dark, with adults displaying a lighter brown head and body, white tail, and yellowish bill. As immature individuals develop, they begin with a mostly brown tail streaked white and a blackish bill, eventually acquiring a fully white tail over approximately four years. Typically scarce, this bird is primarily spotted near seacoasts and major rivers where it predominantly preys on fish.
