Lesser Kestrel

Falco naumanni

5 Photos

This dainty falcon, often spotted in clusters, exhibits males with unspotted upperparts, a blue-gray head, similarly-colored patches on the upperwings, and notably pale underwings. Females sport a faint moustache, slightly lighter cheek, resembling the Eurasian Kestrel closely. Its shape mirrors the Eurasian Kestrel''s, yet with a marginally shorter tail and sometimes protruding central tail feathers. The wings are rounder and briefer compared to the Eurasian Kestrel's. It frequently hovers, deftly capturing airborne insects over open landscapes. This species nests boisterously in colonies on edifices and cliffs.
