Tree Sparrow
Passer montanus
3 Photos
This widespread Eurasian species closely resembles the House Sparrow, albeit slightly smaller. It boasts a fully rufous cap, black and white cheeks, and sparse throat black. Both genders look alike. Often seen in raucous small groups, it prefers natural habitats over urban areas favored by House Sparrows. Its calls are higher-pitched than the House Sparrow''s, with a slightly slower chatter. Primarily a seed eater, it has been introduced to limited areas in central U.S. and southeast Australia.
