Coal Tit
Periparus ater
A small, lively bird, the tit is characterized by a large black bib, white wingbars, and a broad white stripe on the nape. Its appearance varies greatly across regions: Himalayan and Chinese tits sport a small crest, North African ones display yellow-stained cheeks, while European and Siberian varieties lack a crest, showcasing buffy flanks. This species thrives in coniferous forests, mixed woodlands, parks, and gardens, frequently visiting bird feeders. Typically found in foothills and montane areas in the eastern part of its range, it often migrates in groups during autumn and winter, emitting rapid calls as it swiftly moves through foliage. Its melodic song fluctuates geographically. Similar species include the slightly larger Marsh Tit and Willow Tit, which possess larger white cheek patches, less vibrant plumage, and distinct vocalizations.
