An enchanting resident of coniferous forests, mixed woodlands, and pine plantations. It stands out as the sole small songbird in northern Europe sporting a unique crest and a striking head pattern characterized by a predominantly pale face with dark cheeks. During autumn and winter, it frequently accompanies mixed-species flocks, foraging primarily at moderate heights and occasionally on the ground. Its melodic call consists of a bubbling trill often introduced by one or two high-pitched notes.
