Raven

Corvus corax

1 Photos

A sizable, shiny-black bird with a distinct wedge-shaped tail, larger than a crow and sporting a longer, thicker bill. Notable for its unique flight silhouette, featuring elongated, swept-back wings and a lengthy tail, distinguished by smoother, more consistent wingbeats compared to the abrupt flaps of crows. This bird boasts a vast range across the Northern Hemisphere, thriving in diverse environments like deserts, coniferous forests, coastlines, sagebrush plains, tundras, and grasslands. It is often seen alone or in pairs, occasionally congregating in small clusters. Its typical call is a loud, guttural croak, accompanied by an array of peculiar sounds. Contrasted with the Chihuahuan Raven in the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, and similar large, entirely black crows and ravens in Europe and Asia.
