A distinctive, stocky waterbird with dark gray plumage, a white bill, and forehead shield as adults. Immatures sport a pale breast and a duller bill that lightens to bright white over time. Notable for its large feet with lobed toes when walking on shore. Prefers freshwater, brackish marshes, lakeshores, and rivers, occasionally found in saltwater habitats. Breeding pairs display territorial behavior, while nonbreeding flocks can reach hundreds in number. Recognizable across its range, but can be confused with the similar Red-knobbed Coot where their territories overlap. Vocalizations include high-pitched squeaks, squawks, and clipped notes, adding to its distinctiveness.
