Goldfinch

Carduelis carduelis

3 Photos

The charming little finch boasts a vibrant appearance, featuring a sharp pink bill, cherry-red face, and striking black-and-yellow flashes on its wings. In the West (Europe to far western Central Asia), these birds sport a black-and-white cowl, while Eastern counterparts (Central Asia) lack this marking, appearing grayer with more white on their wings. Juveniles, visible in late summer and autumn, exhibit a simple head but are distinguishable by their distinctive wing patterns. Thriving in various habitats like forests, gardens, steppe grasslands, and meadows, they often forage on seeding thistles. During autumn and winter, they congregate in flocks near food sources. While sometimes inconspicuous, their presence is usually revealed by delightful bubbling calls and chirps.
