Bullfinch

Pyrrhula pyrrhula

3 Photos

This bird ranges from uncommon to fairly common, often blending into its surroundings and escaping notice easily. It prefers mixed woodland areas, parklands, gardens, orchards, and farmland with hedges and wooded spots. Typically seen in pairs or small groups, it feeds quietly on buds and fruits. Unlike some birds, it tends not to frequent feeders. The male boasts a striking appearance, sporting a black cap, vivid pink cheeks and breast, and a blue-gray back, while the female exhibits more subdued colors but still displays a distinctive black cap and stubby black bill. A white rump patch becomes apparent mainly during flight. Listen for its soft, plaintive whistled notes as a means of attracting attention.
