Brambling

Fringilla montifringilla

2 Photos

This finch, with its striking orange breast, features males with solid black heads in breeding season and patchy ones otherwise, while females sport gray-and-brown heads. Intricate wing designs and white rump patches dazzle as flocks take flight. Found breeding in northern woodlands near birches and wintering in diverse wooded areas, semiopen landscapes, and farmlands with hedges, it occasionally frequents gardens, parks, and feeder-filled trees. Its unexpected, somewhat harsh song—a buzzing “eerRRRRNnnn”—contrasts with its vibrant appearance. The bird also emits rising “qweee,” high-pitched “tsi, tsi” calls, and various twittering and nasal flock sounds.
